Milk fat first, then manure
SARA rarely announces itself with a down cow. The tank and the alley move while the parlor still looks busy.
A sliding fat test with more loose or foamy manure is the classic pairing. Fat alone can be sampling or supplemental fat. Manure alone can be protein, salt, or a virus. Together, with fewer cud-chewing cows, the rumen is the first hypothesis.
Walk a fresh group and a high group on the same morning. SARA is often worse where starch is highest and peNDF is shortest. Note whether the loose cows are also the ones sorting the bunk face.
Do not turn one pickup into a reformulation. Confirm the trend, then open the numbers layer and the signs strip on this page before you call the nutritionist with a single theory.
Pair the fat test with manure and chewing. One signal is a hint; three are a rumen pattern.
