Water is the third letter in S-A-W
Shade and air get the budget meetings. On a muggy afternoon, the queue at the trough is often the first place heat load becomes visible.
Shade, air, and water — Penn State’s S-A-W order — is easy to remember and easy to skew. Fans and roofs are capital projects. Water looks “already handled” until cows stack at one tank, muddy the apron, or leave the bunk early because drinking takes longer than eating.
Heat raises water need. Extension summaries put the increase in the ballpark of roughly 20–35% in hot weather, as cows push heat out through faster breathing and more urine. That is not a small top-off. It is a traffic problem: enough linear space at the trough, enough flow to refill, and enough stations so subordinate cows are not locked out after milking, when a large share of daily water is often taken.
Watch the waterer the same way you watch the hold. Bunching without drinking is a heat signal, not proof the tank is full. Empty hours at one end of the barn with crowding at the other end is a placement problem. A clean parlor exit with no nearby water turns the walk back to the pen into unpaid heat gain.
S-A-W only works as a set. Shade without air still loads the cow. Air without water still leaves a dehydrated cooler. Before you add another soaker cycle, count trough inches, clean the tanks, and time how long the post-milking queue lasts on a THI-68 day.
On heat days, treat water access as abatement infrastructure — perimeter, flow, and placement — not as a background amenity.
