A wall sensor that says "mild" can still leave cows panting in a dead spot. Temperature-humidity index (THI) is a useful load signal for the barn. Cow-level air speed is what turns that signal into cooling that works — the A in S-A-W, measured where the animal actually stands.
Extension heat programs commonly start fans and evaporative cooling as THI climbs through the mid-60s into the 70s, with more aggressive soaker or mister cycles as load rises. Those thresholds are educational staging guides, not prescriptions — local humidity, stocking, and building type change when cows tip into open-mouth breathing.
A soaker without airflow leaves a wet, hot hide. Fans without enough velocity at cow height look busy on the controller and quiet on the cow. Place air-speed checks (or sensors) in the animal zone — freestall beds, holding pen, feed line — not only at the ridge or the office wall. Staging misters and soakers against both THI and measured air at the cow keeps evaporative cooling from becoming just wet bedding.
On the next warm afternoon, walk the pen with a handheld anemometer or ribbon flag at cow height where cows rest and eat. Does the soaker wet and the fan dry within a sensible window? Do subordinate cows park in dead air while the controller shows "full fans"? If THI says cool but respiration stays high, believe the cow's microclimate before you rewrite the setpoints.
