Chop length is not peNDF
Chop length is a harvester setting; peNDF is the fiber structure that actually reaches the rumen after moisture, processing, mixing, and sorting.

Chop length on the harvester is a useful target, not the fiber story itself. Physically effective fiber (peNDF) is what remains after crop moisture, kernel processing, mixer action, bunk push-ups, and cow sorting. A ration can meet theoretical chop and still under-deliver the mat cows need to chew and buffer.
Theoretical length describes what left the cutterhead. peNDF describes the physical effectiveness of particles that are actually eaten. Soft, pliable long stems may fail to build a stable mat; shorter but rigid particles can still stimulate rumination if they survive mixing and selection. Length alone does not equal effectiveness.
High-moisture forage that shreds in the wagon, overmixing that turns structure into mush, dry fluffy hay that floats out of a wet TMR, and bunk sorting toward fines all move the consumed diet away from the ticket. The cow's mouth and rumen see a different physical profile than the forage lab report printed.
Shake fresh TMR and refusals with the same particle separator for several days. Watch sorting two hours after delivery, rumination patterns, and manure consistency. If chop targets look right but cows sort or chew less, fix dry matter, load order, moisture, and mix time before you rewrite peNDF on paper.
